ACE – Assuring Competence in Engineering Qualification

In order to achieve an ACE card you must first complete a regulated qualification framework (RQF), this is a practical work related qualification enabling the learner to acquire skills, knowledge and understanding to be able to perform a particular occupation or work function.

What will be assessed?

There are two aspects of the candidates working practice that will be assessed and used as evidence, both of which are necessary to successfully complete an RQF qualification:

• Product Evidence – Observation reports and documentation naturally occurring in the assessment location
• Knowledge Evidence – Assessed by online testing supplemented where necessary by recorded technical discussion

How will assessments take place?

Evidence is used to show that the candidate is able to perform to the learner outcome described within the assessment criteria and across the assessment requirements of each unit.

The Assessor will work with the candidate to plan how, when and where observation reports and documentation will be gathered to use as performance evidence.

There are various methods by which to collect performance evidence:

• Direct observation of the candidate’s performance by the Assessor
• Testimony from a witness such as a candidate’s colleague
• Documentary evidence (such as permits to work; work specifications etc.) which relate to work successfully completed by the candidate on a previous occasion
• Demonstration of a task by the candidate at the Assessor’s request, this is known as ‘simulation’ and is only accepted if work cannot be completed onsite or there is no regular process. Simulation must take place at an approved ECITB Training Centre.
• Questioning of the candidate to establish knowledge and understanding requirements
• Conversations with the candidate (such as a technical or professional discussion)
• Online testing of Knowledge-based assessment criteria – This testing will take place at an approved ECITB Testing Centre, an online knowledge test must be successfully completed for each unit. Each test will consist of 20 multiple choice questions and contextual answers. The required pass mark is 60%.

Currently, ACE assessments are available for craftsman, advanced craftsmen and skilled working charge hands in the following occupations:

• Lifting, Positioning and Installing Structures, Plant & Equipment – Erecting
• Lifting, Positioning and Installing Structures, Plant & Equipment – Rigging
• Installing Engineering Construction Plant and Systems – Plating
• Installing Engineering Construction Plant and Systems – Mechanical Fitting
• Installing Engineering Construction Plant and Systems – Pipefitting
• Installing Engineering Construction Plant and Systems – Electrical Fitting
• Engineering Construction Maintenance – Electrical
• Lifting & Positioning Engineering Construction Loads – Simple Lifting & Positioning / Moving Loads Under Supervision
• Supporting The Installing of Engineering Construction Plant and Systems – Pipefitting
• Supporting The Installing of Engineering Construction Plant and Systems – Mechanical Fitting
• Supporting The Installing of Engineering Construction Plant and Systems – Plating

Certification

After successful completion of an RQF, the candidate will be awarded with a Level 3 Certificate in their occupation as well as an ACE Card.

*Please note that in order to obtain an ACE card you must first successfully complete the CCNSG National Safety Passport Course.
