Bridging Course, HNC and Higher Apprenticeships

Earn – Learn – Succeed

The Engineering College offers a Bridging Course and Higher National Certificate (HNC) to advanced students who have completed a relevant Level 3 Qualification in Engineering, and want to further their skills by completing a HNC, to progress their career further.

Bridging Course– 6 months access course to HNC in Engineering Maths and Science

Higher National Certificate – 2-year course in General Engineering with Mechanical and Electrical Principles

Higher Apprenticeship– 1-year course in ‘Automation and Controls Engineering Technician’ OR ‘Engineering Manufacturing Technician’ standard

Post Apprenticeship Courses

The Engineering College offers a range of Post-Apprenticeship courses.

We currently offer; A Bridging Course, Higher National Certificate and Higher Apprenticeship.

A Bridging Course is a 6 monthly Engineering Maths and Science course which allows you to gain access to the HNC based on your previous qualifications. Only those who haven’t completed a BTEC Level 3 in engineering would be eligible. If you have to improve your mathematical and analytical skills in preparation for a level 4 BTEC HNC Engineering qualification, this course is for you.

HNC is a 2-year programme in General Engineering, where you gain advanced skills and knowledge to progress in your career.

The qualification that we deliver here at the college is the Pearson BTEC Level 4 Higher National Certificate in Engineering (General Engineering). This qualification consists of the following units;

  • Engineering Design
  • Engineering Maths
  • Engineering Science
  • Managing a Professional Engineering Project
  • CAD for Maintenance Engineers
  • Mechanical Principles
  • Electrical and Electronic Principles
  • Electro / Pneumatic and Hydraulic Systems

Please Note: To be enrolled on the HNC programme you must have a BTEC Level 3 in Engineering. If you haven’t, the bridging course would be the best option.

Higher apprenticeships provide an opportunity for students to gain a qualification at level 4 and above alongside working. We offer Higher Apprenticeships at Level 4, which include an NVQ and HNC qualification. This is the equivalent to the first year of a degree and can provide further opportunities to learn up to level 7 through academic or vocational routes. Higher Apprenticeships offer a combination of on-the-job and off-the-job training. Upskilling your workforce is cost-effective and will support in developing a motivated, qualified and professional workforce.

Engineering Maths and Science Bridging Course

The Access to HNC Bridging course is designed to bridge the gap between HNC/Higher Apprenticeships

The traditional route to HNC is via a BTEC Level 3 Diploma in either Electrical or Mechanical Engineering. These courses would contain several maths and science topics that are not covered in other level 3 courses. In order for Non-

For this purpose, Unit 331 was designed by C&G to give these students the opportunity to develop their maths and science levels sufficiently to enable them to progress onto our HNC or HE programs. It is a nationally recognised qualification offering career progression and professional development for those already in employment and opportunities to progress into HNC

There is 1 unit to complete over a year.

331- Advanced Mathematics and Science

To pass the course all learners will be able to:

Perform calculations involving, algebra, trigonometry, calculus and statistics.

Perform tests to determine stress, strain and elasticity of materials.

Solve problems involving kinematics, dynamics, bending beams and fluids.

Demonstrate the effects of electromagnetism and alternating current.

Fees:

£500

If you progress to HNC with The Engineering College, this fee will be waivered

Higher apprenticeship entry requirements will depend on the employer or company that organises the scheme. However, all applicants have to be aged 18 or above. Employers typically set the minimum entry requirements of…

  • two or more A levels
  • or an advanced apprenticeship.

The A levels/advanced apprenticeship will have to be in a subject or industry which is closely linked to the higher apprenticeship you are applying for. If your A level subjects or apprenticeship are not related to the higher apprenticeship, an employer might take any previous work experience (which is relevant) into consideration.

You can complete a HND (Higher National Diploma) where we signpost you to Liverpool John Moores University to complete this.
