Apprentice Welder

Looking for an Apprenticeship right on your doorstep?

Cammell Laird are looking for aspiring apprentice welders to join their growing workforce this September! 

Apprentice Welders will be actively and enthusiastically engage in all activities, to ensure that they learn the practical skills, underpinning knowledge and understanding required to qualify as a multi coded welder, whilst ensuring health and safety and statutory regulations and procedures are followed throughout. i.e. Ability to meet the welding standards ISO 9606, AWS D1.1 and ASME IX as required, using various processes and various materials, in all joint configurations, and in all positions, using manual, semi-automatic and fully automatic welding processes.

  • Able to satisfy the welding requirements of the company, client and classification society.
  • To support production in preparation and assembly prior to welding.
  • To clean and prepare, to check for discontinuities prior to presentation to inspection process.
  • To conduct all tasks with due regard to health and safety and the correct use of relevant PPE.

Key Responsibilities: 

  • To be dependable and responsible, (punctual and reliable)
  • Learn and follow all health and safety procedures required to keep yourself and others safe.
  • Familiarise yourself with all equipment; learning how to conduct pre-user checks and report all defects.
  • Learn how to safely use all plant and equipment.
  • Positively commit with mentor, training officers, supervisor and HR to complete all elements of the training programme in a timely manner.
  • Attend full time, block release and/or day release in college, work diligently to complete, modules, units and elements of theoretical learning and underpinning knowledge in a timely manner.
  • Observe, follow instructions, practice and demonstrate practical welding skills, in all procedures, materials and techniques that are required.
  • Assist in the preparation and assembly of components, units etc. prior to welding.
  • Become proficient in welding using various procedures, on all joint configurations, in all positions, meeting specific standards.
  • Follow instructions and advice of supervisors; make a positive contribution in the production process.
  • Successfully complete trade and coding qualification tests to meet Company, client and classification society requirements and specifications.
  • Conduct yourself in a professional manner in all contacts with course personnel, clients, inspectors, supervisors, maintaining the excellent reputation of the company.

Essential Skills

  • Fit with the strength and stamina to complete tasks in very challenging and sometimes inclement conditions
  • Ability to work at heights, within confined spaces and above water
  • Good close eye sight
  • Good hand- eye co-ordination
  • Ability to maintain competency record book, gather recent evidence.
  • Ability to complete assignments and other assessment tasks set by mentor, training officer, training provider and HR
  • Ability to follow health and safety rules, procedures, safe working practices to ensure their own safety and that of others

Qualifications Required

  • A*-C (Grades 4-9) in Maths, English and Science

Apprentice Plater (Metal Fabricator)

Looking for an Apprenticeship right on your doorstep?

Cammell Laird are looking for aspiring apprentice platers to join their growing workforce this September! 

The Apprentice Plater/Fabricator will be responsible for acquiring the core competencies necessary to become a Tradesperson. The role includes a range of duties from reading of engineering drawings, measuring and marking out, cutting, forming and joining of metal plate and structural steel of varying thickness and size. Will be responsible for the assembly of manufactured items and the use of lifting equipment before securing it usually using tack welding.

Key Responsibilities:

  • To be dependable and responsible, (punctual and reliable)
  • Learn and follow all health and safety procedures required to keep yourself and others safe.
  • Familiarise yourself with all equipment; learning how to conduct pre-user checks and report all defects.
  • Learn how to safely use all plant and equipment.
  • Positively commit with mentor, training officers, supervisor and HR to complete all elements of the training programme in a timely manner.
  • Attend full time, block release and/or day release in college, work diligently to complete, modules, units and elements of theoretical learning and underpinning knowledge in a timely manner.

Apprentice Mechanical Fitter

Apprentice Mechanical Fitters will be responsible for acquiring the core competencies necessary to become a Tradesperson. The role includes a range of duties from the initial assembly, installation and setting up through to the maintenance and testing to the eventual, disassembly /decommissioning of machinery equipment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • To be dependable and responsible (punctual and reliable).
  • Must learn and follow all health and safety procedures required to keep themselves and others safe through adherence of statutory regulations and the correct use of relevant PPE.
  • Will familiarise themselves with all equipment; learning how to conduct pre-user checks and report all defects.
  • Must learn how to safely use all plant and equipment.
  • Must positively commit with mentor, training officers, supervisor and HR to complete all elements of the training programme in a timely manner.
  • To attend full time, block release and/or day release in college, work diligently to complete, modules, units and elements of theoretical learning and underpinning knowledge in a timely manner.
  • To observe, follow instructions, practice and demonstrate practical mechanical engineering skills.
  • To become proficient in working from engineering drawings, data and documentation in order to undertake the manufacture, installation, testing, commissioning, fault diagnosis, maintenance, overhaul and removal of mechanical and fluid power equipment.
  • Must develop competency in the use of propulsion machinery, winches, pumps, valves, coolers, plant equipment, cranes and auxiliary systems (such as water, fuel, oil, air and power generation).
  • Will become proficient in the use of common and specialist machine and hand tools, the use of a variety of measuring and diagnostic equipment together with processes to ensure individual components and assemblies meet the required specification.
  • Must follow instructions and advice of supervisors; make a positive contribution in the production process.
  • Must successfully complete trade qualification tests to meet company, client and classification society requirements and specifications.

Ability to meet the construction standards as required, using various techniques and on various materials in the construction and repair of structures. Able to satisfy the construction requirements of the company, client and classification society. To work from engineering drawings, data and documentation, expertise in the safe use of tools, machines, equipment involved in marking out, cutting, bending and forming materials.

  • Able to use thermal processes for cutting and welding.
  • To support production in preparation and assembly of all components, units and modules up to construction stage.
  • To be mindful of accuracy and standard requirements of specific tasks.
  • To conduct all tasks with due regard to health and safety, statutory regulations and the correct use of relevant PPE.
